What begins with Girl Scouts speaking up at a troop meeting can go all the way to speaking in front of their city council for a cause they champion—and they will have your support to thank for that. Your volunteer role makes a powerful difference. Girl Scouts wouldn’t exist without volunteers like you. Your first step as a troop leader may lead to other volunteer opportunities once this year is over.
When you’re ready for more opportunities, be sure to let your council support team know how you’d like to be a part of Girl Scouts’ lives in the future—whether in the same position or in other, flexible ways. Are you ready to organize a series or event? Take a trip? Work with Girl Scouts at camp? Work with a troop as a yearlong volunteer? Share your skills at a council office, working behind the scenes? The possibilities are endless and can be tailored to fit your skills and interests.
Formal adult awards are offered by GSUSA and GSNMT annually to recognize exemplary service of adult Girl Scout members and community partners who go beyond the expectations of their positions. Volunteers, girl members, community partners, or family members may nominate someone to receive an award. Formal awards should be used to honor specific service rather than longevity, and are intended to be only one part of a comprehensive recognition plan.
Nomination Process
Selections are made based on the merit of the nomination and the level of dedication of previous awardees in each category to maintain a consistent level of achievement. Nomination does not guarantee an award. To be considered a valid nomination, the potential awardees must be:
Online forms, including nomination forms, letters of endorsement, community, and council service awards, and numeral guard requests, can be found on the website in November or December of each year at https://www.nmgirlscouts.org/en/for-volunteers/volunteer-resources/recognition---awards.html. Both the Recognitions Committee and the Board are unable to consider late, verbal, or incomplete nominations. Nominations and Endorsement Letters are due NO LATER than close of business on January 31 of each year, without exception.
Nominations and endorsement letters must be submitted on a GSNMT Form. These forms must be completed online. All nominations go before the volunteer-led Recognitions Committee in February or March, before the Board of Directors in March, and the Ceremony is held in April of each year, in connection with Volunteer Appreciation Week.
Without our passionate and dedicated volunteers, there would be no Girl Scouting. That’s why we celebrate National Volunteer Month every April and turn up the party as we ring in National Girl Scout Leader’s Day on April 22.
Girl Scouts also celebrates National Volunteer Week, which falls during the third week of April. What can we say, we love our volunteers!
In addition to the Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trail Council Wide event, Service Units may also do local appreciation events. Watch for announcements from both your Service Unit and GSNMT about this year’s events!
We know that volunteering isn’t always easy, especially when you’re new, so we can’t thank you enough for jumping in to be the mentor and role model she needs! Guiding your Girl Scouts—even if you’re still figuring things out—is nothing short of amazing!
The important thing to remember is, you’re not alone. We are in this with you, ready to help and support you at all times! Thanks again! It’s going to be a great Girl Scout year!
